One fateful night, a peaceful village is thrown into the flames of war. 2010’s Solatorobo: Red the Hunter finally continued the company’s work in that world, now called Little Tail Bronx, but much like its predecessor – it failed to capture a particularly large audience, and once again the company was left unable to find a publisher for another entry in the loosely-tied series. When CyberConnect2 released Tail Concerto back in 1998 on the original PlayStation, it was their first project as a game studio – and the company has continued to return to that world throughout their history. The art is awe inspiring and the music is emotional and beautiful. During intermissions, you can chat with the kids to strengthen your bonds to increase your special link attack with them. Between battles, you can collect treasures to upgrade your tank, health, special attack refills, and have an intermission break. There are three different weapons the kids specialize in: Cannons, Machine Guns, and Grenade Launchers. Each child has their own specialty when reaching ‘hero mode’ after fighting for a while and having a task fulfilled beforehand. The bulk of the gameplay in Fuga: Melodies of Steel is turn-based battles against the Berman army in waves and boss battles at the end of each chapter.

We have to fight! If we don’t, everyone we love will be taken away! This made for a game that was nearly impossible to put down and an experience where I felt like I needed to gasp for air whenever I managed to win. How a handful of bad tactical decisions can result in your tank getting blown to pieces or worse, seeing one of the main characters die permanently to save the others. Seeing all of those adorable children didn’t prepare me for how much fretting and consideration that would go into my every move.
